Our Idea

Icing on the cake

Supercharge your fundraising!

Now that we’ve covered the basics, we wanted to add a twist to make your new website truly stand out and help reach your goals.

Let's talk gamified fundraising

Gamification is the future of non-profit fundraising

Improving the website and running a campaign will boost your donations and memberships – but to get to the numbers you’re hoping for, it’s going to take a little more innovation. A new game feature will position your website at the forefront of innovative fundraising strategies, not to mention helping to entertain and educate.

Gamification is a proven method for boosting donations, improving membership retention, and increasing community involvement. Studies show that gamified fundraising can increase engagement by 100-150% and build a sense of community among supporters, driving more donations and involvement.

Integrating a game into the new website will support and amplify your appeal for the 25th anniversary of the fence, strategically aligning fundraising activities to maximise your bang for buck.

Idea 1

Protect your manu!

To give you a flavour of how gamification could work, we’ve come up with a few wild ideas!

We’ll work with you to land on the right gamification option for you, but these examples show how the concept might be used to engage your audience.

Our first game idea is "Protect the Manu," designed to support long-term fundraising and membership goals. This game lets users choose a bird to support, navigate a digital forest to protect their bird by planting trees and setting traps, and join team activities to raise funds.

By centering the game around protecting native birds, we create a fun, educational, and community-driven experience that boosts fundraising and connects people to New Zealand’s natural heritage.

How does it work?

Bird Personality Quiz

  • Quiz Time: Discover which bird you want to support – do you want to get behind a cheeky fantail or a social tui?
  • Share Your Manu: Flaunt your bird on social media to spread the word and join the fun!

Interactive Sanctuary

  • Spot Your Bird: Navigate a digital NZ forest (like Where’s Wally for nature), spotting your bird and completing tasks to protect it.
  • Plant and Protect: Plant trees for food and set traps for predators to create a safe haven for your birds. Whose manu will be the one to get the most protection?
  • Conservation Tips: Get practical advice on helping birds in your local area.
  • Unlock Features: Gain "bird’s eye vision" to soar above Zealandia.

Community Building

  • Join the “Squawk Squad”: Team up with fellow bird lovers for events, get competitive by tracking your progress, and tackle fundraising challenges together.

Discover Your Hero

  • In-Game Donations: Beat the competition with donations.
  • Merchandise: Buy bird-themed goodies to support Zealandia.
Idea 2

Which Conservation Hero Are You?

Discover Your Hero

Users take a fun quiz to find out their conservation hero personality, based on their interests. Are you a ‘Pest Control Hero’, a ‘Tree Guardian’, or a ‘Wildlife Warrior’?

Take Action

Each hero type has specific conservation actions, like trapping possums or planting trees, aligned with Zealandia’s goals and how we’d like to inspire people.

Interactive Gameplay

Users engage in virtual conservation tasks, earning points and rewards for activities like pest control and tree planting.

Personalised Experience

The simple game suggests events, purchases, and online learning tailored to their hero type, creating a personalised user journey.

This new theme keeps the same effective fundraising strategy but with a fresh twist, turning users into conservation heroes, which could connect to membership data and profiling. We can use this info we collect in marketing for target events and promotions too!

Idea 3

Educational Hub

As another interactive option, we think one approach to education and thought leadership is to build a robust educational hub on the website. This hub would make educational materials more personalised, accessible and engaging, and longer term, create an opportunity for eLearning, webinars and other online content that positions Zealandia as a global conservation leader.

Potential Features

Expanded Educational Hub

  • A dedicated hub for all educational content
  • Materials in multiple languages and formats (eg, podcasts, digital downloads, videos etc)
  • Content could be created by partners and the community, creating a central place for knowledge sharing

Personalised Learning

  • A personalised resource library that suggests content based on your learning styles and interests
  • A filtering system to easily find topics of interest, such as specific conservation actions
  • Interactive elements like quizzes

Benefits

Engagement

Provides a valuable resource for educators, students, and the community.

Lead Generation

Drives more visitors to the website and increases engagement through personalised content.
